It’s been over a decade since, but I still vividly remember the day my kid crumpled and tore up his math worksheet and ceremoniously walked over and dropped it in the trash as I sat, stunned by his nerve.
I was sitting with him, trying to help him through a page of long division problems, and he just couldn’t handle the frustration anymore. I didn’t know then what I know now, so I snapped at him and volleyed some big threats if he didn’t retrieve his worksheet so it could be completed.
At that point, meltdown moved into shutdown and nothing got done because… I was completely missing the role of the nervous system in learning and behavior.
